Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is collected at every stage of production and included in the price. Sales tax is added at the point of sale. The end result for consumers is similar, but the collection mechanism differs.
Do freelancers need to charge VAT?
It depends on your country and revenue. In the UK, you must register for VAT once turnover exceeds Β£85,000. In the EU, thresholds vary by country. Below the threshold, you generally don't need to charge VAT.
How do I calculate VAT-inclusive vs VAT-exclusive?
To add VAT: multiply by (1 + rate). To remove VAT: divide by (1 + rate). For example, Β£100 + 20% VAT = Β£120. To find the pre-VAT price of Β£120: Β£120 Γ· 1.20 = Β£100.
